Sony have confirmed they have switched on the PSN (PlayStation Network) again for users in the UK (with other regions to follow). 1 month after the cyber attack on Sony systems that left millions of users unsure if their personal data or credit card information had been stolen by the hackers, Sony have released a statement to all existing PSN users which apologises for the downtime and the security breach.
In order to try and sweeten the PSN users across the globe, Sony have also offered some freebies which take the form of a choice of games to download for free and access to the Sony Playstation Plus system (for a limited time). Some users will also be offered a free movie rental from the store for a weekend. PSP users are offered an alternative to suit their console.
The full list of details can be seen on the Sony PSN homepage.
For PS3 users, when connecting to the PSN for the first time they will be asked to change their password (which can be done from the PSN website) and to download a system patch for their consoles. Not a massive problem and if it resolves the security loophole that was previously exploited then we can’t see why many people would complain at this.
So now we’re just going to sit back and wait for the figures to come in about PS3 sales for the April – May 2011 period as that would make for an interesting read…
