It’s been a couple of years but Jackie Estacado is back after losing his beloved Jenny in The Darkness 2. He’s learned to supress the voices that crave evil and live a normal life of a mobster boss but it’s not long before the familiar dark tentacles appear either side of the screen to help dismember anyone getting in Jackie’s way.

The first thing we noticed about The Darkness 2 was the new cell-shaded graphics which is subtle thanks to the gloomy surroundings each of the levels are played through. Rather than stand out in the striking way they do in Borderlands and Prince of Persia, the cell shading helps bring The Darkness 2 to life in a more cult comic-book feel – something The Darkness seems at home with.

Moving away from the visuals, the gameplay has the same full-on action as its predecessor while keeping the intrigue of the storyline which will appeal to followers of the original Darkness game. Jackie has the usual selection of pistols, machine guns and shotguns at his disposal, able to pick up and swap from fallen enemies but also has the all-important power of the twin tentacles that come with The Darkness which is where the fun factor comes in to play.

Rather than blast your way through the various levels, The Darkness 2 allows you to vary your attacks from gun fire and entices you to use the powers you’ve been given. From grabbing all sorts of inanimate objects and hurtling them towards the enemy to swiping, slicing and dicing anyone who gets in your path safe in the knowledge that in later levels you can use your new found powers to improve gunfire or strength of The Darkness tentacles.

That brings us neatly onto the power-up tree where you can spend your collected Darkness points from the fallen enemies or chaos you have caused throughout your journey. Each section of the power-up tree represents a section of Jackie’s talents – whether you chose to improve his weapon proficiency, overall health and strength or unlock more destructive talents of The Darkness including the awesome Black Hole power which scoops up nearby enemies into nothingness.

But it’s not all straightforward out and out shooting and killing for Jackie – as well as trying to keep the mysterious Brotherhood from sucking The Darkness from his body, he also has to deal with going mad and the hallucinations that take him into a Mental Asylum where his friends are the orderlies and even Jenny reappears! Rather than slow down the action these scenes play out important parts of the story and allow you to catch your breath between frantic battles and onslaughts all the while staying interactive and providing the same unique humour that is fitting with the series.

The mulitplayer modes are on the poor side – it’s a good effort to bring another level to The Darkness 2 but we were left feeling like if that bit of effort which went into the Multiplayer modes was put in to a another single player level or two then nobody would have minded. It’s a shame as the introduction of new characters and the plethora of kill styles available is decent but misses having a spark that wants you to come back for more.

Overall we looked forward to getting another chance at playing Jackie Estacado and wielding dual pistols while grabbing unsuspecting henchmen and ripping them into pieces with the power of The Darkness and this sequel didn’t disappoint. Except for the multiplayer.

If the names Soap McTavish or Makarov send tingles of excitement down your spine or you have ever growled the words ‘dogs coming right at us’ then you’ll no doubt be a fan of the unbelievably successful Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series. The third instalment is now among us with the entire world caught up in conflict. But never mind the campaign – there’s the whole other side of the game with the famed CoD multiplayer. MW3 – do your worst because we are ready!!

If you’ve never played a Modern Warfare game then you won’t understand the hype that has surrounded the release of Modern Warfare 3 or the frantic online action that has caused some people to live and breathe the Modern Warfare maps. If you have played the series then you’re in for yet another jaw dropping and mouth watering gem.

Fire up the campaign mode and you’ll be treated to some fabulous intro movies which set the tone. Soap is left on his death bed after the epic last level of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and is being rushed through a war zone to the safety of a waiting chopper ready to evacuate him to saftey. As this is happening there’s flashbacks popping up of key moments from the previous games which will mean nothing to those who’ve not had the pleasure but to fans they are iconic moments which you’ll enjoy seeing again.

The story chops and changes from character to character according to how the story progresses – fighting for the SAS in one level and then as the US special forces in the next. This makes for plenty of environmental changes from London subways to the streets of suburban America, all of which are war torn thanks to a Russian invasion!

The single player action remains pretty much what we’d expect from the Modern Warfare series – fast paced, lots of action and a bit on the short side to complete. Trying your luck on Veteran difficulty will require practice on the levels as some of the levels will have enemy forces bombarding you with their firepower and a huge feeling of being overwhelmed.

London at full terror alert on Modern Warfare 3

As fans of the series we were won over from the very start but as the story unfolds and the references to things from previous games are mentioned (like the Guerilla level from Modern Warfare 1) we couldn’t help but relate to the characters on screen, immersing us totally into the aura of the game as we knew what they were talking about as we’d been there and done it with them.

Its fair to say that without the previous Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games, the slick storytelling finishes to Modern Warfare 3 wouldn’t be the same.

The graphics on the whole are much improved. The sight of New York’s financial district being missile’d from a speeding boat while being shot at by enemy forces could be straight out of a multi million dollar Hollywood blockbuster. The detail in the main aspects of the game such as the various weapons, stitching on the gloves of your character and even the litter streaming around Sierra Leone just makes everything stand out and come to life.

Aside from the campaign there’s the Spec Ops mode which puts you in a series of challenges against waves of enemies. As you fight them off and get to the next level you can use credits earned to spend on bigger and better weapons. Playing this Spec Ops mode on single player is a huge waste after you’ve played in with friends. Strategic placement of your allies is key to getting further in the waves of enemies and a great way to improve your overall skills for CoD.

Switch on multiplayer though and be prepared to lose a serious chunk of your life. Addictive as ever, the familiar multiplayer hub drip feeds you into the online world by allowing you a small selection of the basic online game types and weapons. Play a few games and you’ll start ranking up and unlocking more features, game modes and weapons.

Although some might feel cheated by how quickly you can rank up in the first few hours of play, we think its a great way of keeping gamers of all levels hooked and gradually introduced to the more diverse of game types the Modern Warfare 3 has to offer.

Being able to create a custom weapon class and create a Clan tag are back along with the challenges that help boost your xp towards that all important Prestige level. Gaining Prestige is also better than ever with Prestige tokens on offer so you can put that hard work to use.

The introduction of the Call of Duty Elite is built into the online lobby (but requires a quick download from the relevant network stores for free) and allows gamers to track their progress of online games. From number of kills to proficiency with weapons to even where the most kills and deaths took place on maps, the Call of Duty Elite is hoping to do what the Bungee network did for Halo (or at least get started!).

All in all, we can’t help but heap praise on Modern Warfare 3. The campaign might be short but its packed with everything that fans will love. The multiplayer yet again shows why Infinity Ward and Activision keep selling ridiculous amounts of games and with all that said, we’re off to the lobbies right now…!

Born with powers beyond the norm, small groups of people all over the world have used their gifts for good and for bad. When secret government experiments on a drug used to enhance these powers starts to kill all test subjects, two young Americans in Hong Kong use their powers to find the latest test subject who has escaped in Push.

Nick Grant (Chris Evans) is hiding away in Hong Kong after hiding from the man who killed his father because of his powers. Living in secret while trying to win at illegal gambling by using his powers, Nick is discovered by Cassie (Dakota Fanning) who has the gift of being able to see the future or intentions of their focus. After bring brought up to speed on the girl who has escaped the test labs of the secret government agency trying to inject her with a trial drug that enhances the development of the powers, Nick and Cassie set about trying to save the girl in a strange country with gangs of other super-powered people also chasing them.

Push is one of those films that sounds good, starts off promisingly but then wilts away the longer you watch. Despite having a decent set of characters with powers that could be put to some good use to make a comic book style film a cult classic, Push leaves the audience partly confused with the over complex story line and wanting more from the slow paced action scenes.

With the entire story taking place in Hong Kong, the culture of the locals and the environments allow for a different take on the more traditional super-power film which are usually set in Manhattan. Gangs of Hong Kong triads chase through market squares and shanty towns and scenes on the Hong Kong harbours might look good but the tediousness of everyone being American or British of any real significance being in Hong Kong at the same time doesn’t carry over very well. It all feels a little bit out of place.

Drawing the future in Push

The various powers that are thrown into the mix during Push are also a bit odd – there’s the Watchers like Cassie, who can see the future, the Pushers who can influence people and create entire back stories and histories for their subjects to get them to do their bidding and there’s the ones with more action-based powers like Nick who can shift objects using kinetic powers and the very odd and seemingly pointless banshee type screamers who need to remove their sun glasses to unleash a loud wail which makes people roll around on the floor for a bit.

So against all traditions of location and powers, Push has delivered a film that goes against the grain to try and do something a bit different and ended up with something that works in parts but fails to really get across in full the action, drama and story. If you like comic-book films then you’ll probably enjoy Push for what it does but if you’re not a fan of those sorts of films then Push is unlikely to win you over.

In a world where everything is just a barren wasteland and people have to live in subways and purpose-built fortresses, Bethesda know what they are doing. With the success of the Fallout games under their belts, the hotly anticipated game from E3 is unleashed – Rage.

This chap does not want to make friends – Rage

You awake from a frozen-state sleep inside the safety of an Ark many years after Earth has been directly hit by a massive meteor which changed the planet as we know it. Everything on the surface was either wiped out or mutated as a result of the climate changes. People have been forced to live in shanty towns and make shift cities from whatever was left after the impact.

Stumbling out of the Ark and into the wasteland for the first time you are faced with a small band of bandits called the Ghost Clan. Coming to your rescue is a local named Dan Hagar (voiced by John Goodman) who helps you escape and drives you both to safety in a converted dune buggy where you meet the rest of the good guys.

As the story unfolds you find out you are the only survivor of your Ark and the mysterious ‘Authority’ are capturing anyone who comes out of the many Arcs dotted around the globe, never to be seen again. Your task is to not only evade capture from the Authority but to find out any information on the original Eden Project who built the Arks.

The first couple of hours playing Rage are a gradual introduction to the huge world and its many characters. Getting to grips with the weapons and the driving sections come about at just the right point in the game to keep the progress going without overwhelming the gamer.

The first few missions are pretty mundane – search and rescue a missing crew member or retrieve some information or gadget – the usual. The added bonus of being able to drive around in the quad bikes and dune buggies throws in a bit more excitement to the proceedings, especially when you realise there’s gattling guns and missles on board your vehicle to take down random bandits as you go from A to B.

As well as being able to shoot from the vehicles you can also race your various vehicles when you find the race tracks in the towns you will come across. Each race has varying degrees of difficulty and some will allow you use your weapons mid race. Win the races and you’ll earn credits to spend on kitting out your buggy with spiked wheels, turbo boosts or better weapons and ammo.

But driving is only a part of Rage as you’ll mostly be walking around talking to the locals or killing the enemy. By talking to as many people as you can you will not only find out nuggets of information but also unlock new missions. Again, the missions will vary slightly but involve driving somewhere, getting out and killing some bad guys before either rescuing someone, something or blowing something up. Complete the side missions to unlock new weapons or earn money to spend in the shops.

The shops will let you buy all sorts from hardened armour to upgrades for your weapons to blueprints and components to build gadgets and grenades. You can also sell off any of the random bits of junk you collect from the dead enemies you kill from missions. From the in game menu you can put these blueprints to use and build things like bandages to provide instant health boosts, various grenades or ammo and also the very handy sentry bots and assign these to the quick-use menu for frantic battles.

All of this put together makes a pretty decent game – there’s no denying that. The only real problem is that its all too familiar. If we’d never heard of Fallout or New Vegas then there’s no question that Rage would be in our consoles more often than not. But we can’t help but feel it has missed the boat by a couple of years. Yes the graphics are strikingly crisp and bold which make everything feel alive on screen and the animation of the NPC’s is superb. But looking good is one thing whereas making something that has been done already look a bit better is something else.

Its unfair to say that Rage is a glorified Fallout – that would be an unfair comment on both games. Rage has its own things to offer that Fallout does not – vehicles and Sentry bots. But honestly, after a good 10-15 hours of gameplay it was beginning to feel like a chore to do yet another mission which had the same ingredients as the countless ones before in a story that seemed to be dragging out much longer than necessary. Considering our character is a born killer, he fails to get information out of anybody without having to run around doing several missions before being told to go see someone else. Yes the missions can be good but it just starts to grate.

Despite being tipped as the biggest game in years by the makers of Doom (id software), Rage has failed to grab us as we thought it would. There’s a lot of game to keep you going but it will only keep you interested if you’ve not played Fallout or are a hardcore Wasterland surviver. Good game – just not great.

The big announcement and reveal has been made – GTA V (Grand Theft Auto 5) is officially on its way and it looks AMAZING!

Rumours are that it is expected to be the first game looking to reach the £1bn sales mark – the first game to be mentioned with anything of the sort. But if the fifth instalment to the Grand Theft Auto series is to be half as good as it looks in the official trailer below and builds on the last outing of GTA IV then its going to blow everything else out of the water. Have a look at the Official GTA 5 Trailer at PlayEject:

GTA 5 Trailer thoughts:

Aside from the excellent looking graphics and scenery, the major point we saw in the GTA V trailer was the new character, looking for a fresh start. This takes us away from previous characters of rags-to-riches and instead looks like it might be riches-to-rags? We can only speculate at this point but by the looks of things we might be able to start off driving sports cars and living in the flash houses that we all aspired to with CJ in San Andreas.

Although there wasn’t much of an idea of the size and scale of the world we can explore, we are hoping that the glipse of the mountain terrain spotted (with the hikers in the trailer) is an indication that there’s some more off-road locations which helped San Andreas’s world be so huge to explore. That said, if its literally just mountains and snow and sparse then we might not spend much time and it could be wasted opportunity. We have full faith in Rockstar to make best use though.

The only hint at missions to expect were the masked robbers jumping out of a van and the like. If working as part of a team is involved in the main story then this already changes the dynamics of previous GTA games where you have always worked alone. We’re hoping that there might be some sort of co-op multiplayer action for the campaign as there was in the multiplayer version of GTA 4 where you could perform drive-by shootings on other gangs and other misbehavings.

Provided there’s a decent amount of variety, a good combat system and the graphics perform well on the consoles, GTA 5 should be another instant hit.

Get in the mood for GTA V by checking out some of the previous Grand Theft Auto classic games:

We make no bones about it, Batman is easily the PlayEject favourite when it comes down to comic book heroes. So when the sequel to Arkham Asylum was released we were excited beyond belief. Being the Dark Knight in a free roam environment with the promise of gadgets and comic book villains galore, Batman: Arkham City steps from the shadows and swoops into action!

The Joker was left for dead on a rooftop after his last encounter with Batman which made way for top criminal bosses to try their hand at taking over Gotham’s Arkham City. After officals decide enough is enough they cut Arkham City off from the rest of civilisation leaving anyone inside trapped within their own mess.

Along comes the Penguin and Harvey ‘Two Face’ Dent along with their own bands of thugs who are willing to do their bidding. Fears from outside Arkham City are that if things are left as they are there will be nothing left to rescue if it continues so in steps the Batman to mop up the baddies and save the day.

Things take a sharp turn for the worse when The Joker is revealed alive but in bad shape. Poisoning Batman with the same toxic substance that is killing the Joker, Batman must find a cure while stopping almost every known enemy he has come across in his past from Mr Freeze to Zsaz.

Start up Batman Arkham City and you will be immersed immediately into the storyline with the introduction of Catwoman helping Batman in their quest to rid Arkham City of the scum. The first thing we noticed about Catwoman’s character is how gracefully she moves and fights in comparison to Batman. Catwoman dances in her combat in comparison to Batman who uses brute force and a few jumps and somersault rolls. Also Catwoman scales tall buildings by using her whip and a jump-climb rather than Batman’s zip lines and Batrope.

The combat hasn’t changed much since – the thugs will attack using fists, knives and guns and you can still build up combo’s, counter attack and use special attacks after reaching a certain combo hit level. The combat was fine in the first game and consequently hasn’t been tweaked for Batman. It still feels great to take down a large group of thugs with attack and counter-attack moves and hit that final crushing blow in slow-motion without having taken a hit yourself.

Detective Mode will be your new best friend in Batman Arkham City

Batman has had a few extra and improved gadgets – mostly due to the characters he meets. The Explosive Gel and Batarang’s are there but there’s also the new freeze-grenades and handy Smoke pellets for when there’s overwhelming gun fire and you need a quick getaway in true Michael Keaton-Batman style.

The biggest difference in Arkham City over Asylum is the open world environment. You can explore the entire city from the get-go (bar a few locked areas that open up as the story progresses) and take part in the various sub-missions that appear as you explore. Each sub mission helps you move closer to another famous villain from Zsaz’s telephone tracing (where you must get from one ringing phone to another and then trace the call in a time limit) to stumbling upon a recently shot body and work out the trajectory of the bullet to find clues about the shooter and track them down. You can’t just plod on with 1 mini mission until you have completed it either – you will only unlock further clues by playing the rest of the game which is great way of holding things back and providing a bit of longevity.

Of course it wouldn’t be a Batman game without the cryptic and strangely addictive Riddler trophies which are dotted around Arkham City for both Batman and Catwoman to find – each only able to collect their own types which again encourages longevity. As well as the little green or pink trophies there’s the return of the environment clues which need to be solved by working out what Riddler is on about and using the Detective Mode’s Scan function to register what you’ve seen. Solving these clues not only helps you level up to unlock better gadgets and suit powerups but also unlocks Riddler’s own side missions and Challenge Mode missions.

These Challenges are in the same format as last time – either full on combat where you take down the goons with as decent a combo as possible or the Predator challenges where you must stay hidden in the shadows to score Takedowns on unsuspecting thugs, earning Bat tokens for your troubles. Catwoman has her own levels for this and so does Robin if you purchase the Robin pack.

All in all, Batman Arkham City has more than lived up to the great expectations left from the previous game. The superb story, plethora of famous enemies and excellent detail in everything from scenery to background information on people you encounter (for comic book fans) as well as one of the best games we have played in a long, long time and worthy of the PlayEject ‘MUST PLAY GAME’ award.

A bad mouthed teacher with a bad attitude is dumped by her sugar daddy but sets her sights on a new target when a new co worker is discovered to be rich as well as good looking. Going against her usual lifestyle and pitting against a well loved fellow teacher, Cameron Diaz is a Bad Teacher.

Thinking she will never need to work as a teacher again, Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz) leaves her last day at school to get home and find her husband and mother-in-law waiting to kick her back out for being a gold-digger. Forced to return back to work at the school, Elizabeth is introduced to the new teacher, Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake) who is getting over his long term relationship after a recent break up. After discovering how rich Scott is, Elizabeth sets to work on seducing him much to the blatant annoyance of zany-yet-lovable teacher Amy Squirrel (Lucy Punch).

Convinced that the only way Scott is going to fall for her (and earn her share of his fortune), Elizabeth starts saving for a boob job by using the best assets she has – albeit immoral and against everything Amy stands for. All the while, gym coach Russell (Jason Segel) takes every opportunity to hit on Elizabeth with his relaxed charm and easy going personality.

Cameron Diaz does a great job of being the teacher from hell – Bad Teacher has the tagline: “She doesn’t give an F” and that works so well. It’s a comedy that works at being funny with some original jokes and characters that come across well. The problems really come with the amount of jokes that are packed in to it. While the majority of gags will go down well with most audiences, by the time you’ve gotten half way through the film you start to feel that some of the jokes were expected or were obvious in how they were being built up.

Those who can – teach in Bad Teacher

The characters also start to grate – although Amy Squirrel starts off as a slightly crazy teacher with a good heart, there comes a point in the film where we just got a bit fed up of her as it was the same old thing.

Justin Timberlake plays his part well as the air-head rich boy who is too good to be true but his character also goes a bit sidewards and comes out with some very odd behaviour towards the end which looking back, didn’t fit with the rest of his character.

None of this should really detract from what is essentially a light hearted comedy film that makes no bones about being a little bit silly. Its just that we found it hard to really enjoy it, despite laughing out loud at the start and even guffawing at some of the slapstick moments.

Convinced that a boob job will make Scott fall for her, Elizabeth sets her heart and soul on earning as much cash as she can by any means necessary. This involves the usual unethical and immoral methods such as turning up in hotpants for a fundraising car wash then pocketing the money or trying to win the school exam bonus. All the while Amy is trying to dig dirt on Elizabeth to the Dolphin loving headmaster and forcing back a mental breakdown.

We were reminded of School of Rock while watching bad teacher. Except Jack Black isn’t a hot Cameron Diaz. And he didn’t need a boob job. Nor did he try and pull a fellow teacher. But it was definitely about a school and was good for a laugh the first time around. However, watching it again doesn’t interest us.

The trouble is, Bad Teacher is just a bit too predictable – enjoyable, but predictable.

Nathan Hale is dead, the Chimera have attacked and annihilated the American armies leaving small bands of survivors with the bare minimum to live on and terrified of their own homes. Random attacks by the Chimera to exterminate the remaining population are common yet Joseph Capelli refuses to lay down and give in. Taking on the role of Joseph in the third instalment to the flagship game of the PS3, Resistance 3 continues the main story of the series in true action-packed fashion.

The stunning looking trailers and stills have built expectations of what we hope to experience through our review of Resistance 3. Being the third game in the series, especially one that means so much to Sony and many PS3 gamers, getting details, gameplay and everything in between just right are crucial to avoid being classed as just another cash-in.

Fortunately it appears Sony and publisher Insomniac Gaming have gotten this balance spot on. The slick looking intro takes us through a brief history of the Chimera attack and how the people of America are forced to live underground and scavenge what they can inbetween the Chimeran armies attacks and drop ship invasions.

Taking the role of Joseph Capelli, a former SRPA operative who’s had plenty of experience dealing with the Chimera, you must leave your family and battle your way to New York to tackle the Chimera HQ that is poisoning the planet. Various Chimera troops will try to take you down along the way but to add to the troubles, small gangs of human scavengers will also try to kill you and take whatever you have for their own benefit.

From the off, Resistance 3 throws you into action and gives you a Bullseye – a Chimera assault rifle that can tag enemies so the bullets home in on the target. The detailed graphics and lighting bring out the best in the war-torn environments that you travel through and the cut scenes and voice acting are brilliant.

From this early stage its clear that the Resistance series is kept alive and well – so far, so good.

Progressing through the main campaign feels slicker and more interesting than Resistance 2 and the evolution of the Chimera troops as you get further on means you have to utilise the different weapons and plan your attacks accordingly forcing variety in the way you play. The weapons are brilliant – from the standard shotgun, pistols and assault rifles you have primary and secondary fire modes and the level-up of each weapon which unlocks added bonuses such as incendiary rounds to the shotgun or a better zoom on the Deadeye sniper rifle.

A Brawler can be taken down with concentrated firepower

Playing through the levels there was an air of familiarity to some of the styles of the stages you encounter as Joseph. We were reminded an awful lot by the on-rails sections of Gears of War on the Xbox 360 – travelling by boat but fending off attacks from the enemies or on a fast moving train, etc. This isn’t a bad thing – the rails sections are a welcome break from the norm and are in-keeping with the rest of the game while also allowing the story to progress without cut scenes taking over.

One negative we did find was that some of the larger enemies which look ridiculously hard to kill are actually fairly easy to take down. A Brawler for example will rampage through a wall and chase you down – a scary opening as he dominates the screen and hurtles towards you. But if you use the Auger’s sights you can easily spot the weak points and then switching back to the Bullseye and using the Tag function makes light work of the enemy. Unfortunately this is how easy we found it to eliminate most of the other larger ‘bosses’ we encountered – we had hoped for a slightly tougher battle.

The multiplayer aspect of Resistance 3 is as you’d expect from Resistance 2 – the human versus Chimera aspect changes the battlefield slightly against the likes of Call of Duty or Killzone 3. The variety in the weaponry from the campaign crosses over to the multiplayer brilliantly and sets up for some tense battles. With the Auger gun, you can fire through walls after spotting the heat signature of your enemy which can help flush out enemies from cover while a team mate can train their sights with the Marksman sniper rifle. Or you could just fire some Magnum rounds into a path you think an enemy will run and when they go past, set off the explosive charges buried into the shells! Great stuff!!

Overall, Resistance 3 grabs you from the moment you start and will keep you hooked. The campaign is great – Joseph is a decent character and the story not only follows the series but builds on it which is what is needed from a third instalment. The multiplayer will be a blast after you get the hang of the frantic pace but unfortunately we can see the lobbies getting quieter and quieter with other big name releases such as MW3 and Battlefield 3 out shortly after!

Five Minarets in New York follows a dangerous and famed Islamic leader named Dajjal is discovered to be living in New York – Turkish Secret Police are dispatched to collect the Terrorist from the FBI after they make the arrest. While transporting the prisoner his friends and family mastermind an escape and hide Dajjal but the Turkish Police and FBI are not prepared to let him slip into the night…

Split between Istanbul and New York, Five Minarets in New York starts strongly with a series of fast paced action scenes with the Turkish Secret Police following leads and knocking down doors of the known criminals and informants to gain intel on Dajjal. Once they have the name of the man they are looking for they head to New York where he is hiding in plain sight.

After finding Dajjal and taking him into custody, the FBI Agent in charge, David Becker (Robert Patrick – Terminator 2), enforces his position in the whole operation by being a hard-ass but plays ball with the Turkish Agents, Acar and Firat. When Dajjal escapes from the help of his wife (Gina Gershon – Face/Off) and family friend Marcus (Danny Glover – Lethal Weapon), the Turkish Secret Police step up their search and take matters into their own hands for hunting him down.

The history of the characters flood back and stir lost emotions as the story progresses in this stop-start Political and Religion based drama. Some of the action scenes and terrorist-led parts of the story are straight out of Jack Bauer’s book from 24 while the more slower paced parts of the film will create different reactions as the events unfold, allowing the audience to connect with the characters and change your perspective of each one as more is revealed.

Firat doesn't mess around in 5 Minarets in New York

We started watching Five Minarets in new York and felt pretty smug with ourselves when we thought we’d had it all figured out 20 minutes in but that smugness was long gone 10 minutes later when so much more backstory had been drip fed to us.

A warning we should provide to anyone watching Five Minarets in New York is that it does require (and deserve) your full concentration for the duration. If you pop out for a toilet break or drink then expect to spend the rest of the film totally confused as so much happens so quickly – not so much on the action side of things but more in terms of where the characters are and what else has been revealed. This is not necessarily a bad or negative point to the film but it does make it harder viewing for those with a short attention span or those wanting something a bit more relaxing to watch perhaps.

We enjoyed 5 Minarets in New York for what it is – a drama that looks at a slightly different side of the War on Terror and those affected with the sacrifices made in their lives.

Four winners of a competition from Social Network site All2gethr.com are being flown on a private jet to New York on an all expenses trip. After the usual brief introductions the 4 are given a game to play by the mysterious voice from All2gethr.com which involves some very exposing questions about each of the winners proving that Big Brother really is watching your every move across the Internet. With a series of twists and turns that drive the story forward, Panic Button takes some of the best bits from modern day horror/thrillers and throws them into the mix – we find out the results…

Luxury Private jet to NYC – just read the T & C's

After leaving her young daughter safely at home with gran, Jo (Scarlett Alice Johnson – Adulthood) gets on board the luxury private jet with the rest of the lucky winners heading to New York. The mix of personalities makes for some uncomfortable times with the in-your-face Dave (Michael Gibson – Cemetery Junction) taking advantage of the free drinks to make him even more annoying and hassle the other girl on the plane, Gwen (Elen Rhys – Torchwood) and the quiet, level-headed Max (Jack Gordon – Primeval).

To help pass the time of the flight and as a welcome distraction from Dave’s overbearing personality, the competition runners and Social Networking site All2gethr.com provide a game for the group to play. After accepting the standard terms and conditions, the first round kicks off with a mysterious voice coming from the planes’ speaker system asking each question. What feels casual and relaxed at first soon takes a dark turn for the worse as the first round of questions embarrass each member of the group with some very personal secrets.

As the game progresses, the uneasy atmosphere catapults into overdrive as the group realise that they are not headed for New York and they have been set up by the mysterious voice. Trying to escape while in a private jet with no outside communication causes panic to set in and the darker side of each of the group comes out as they are given lifelines to save their loved ones from torture and death by performing certain deeds.

At first Panic Button feels like it is going to be fairly mundane and another run-of-the-mill modern horror/thriller. But the different personalities of the cast as well as the back-stories of each being slowly revealed to fill in the gaps keeps you drawn in to the plot. There’s a considerable nod to the Saw franchise with the calm and mysterious voice who is the overseeing mastermind behind everything but with some new and original twists on the whole ‘Big Brother’ and being watched.

Things take a turn for the worst – Panic Button

Because Panic Button is mostly filmed aboard the private jet, the captive spaces add to the sense of panic, fear and desperation that is carried over from the actors to the audience – the helplessness that is put on each when they see live footage of their loved ones captured and being tortured when they get questions wrong from the quiz provides another layer to the story by bringing factors outside of their own immediate safety.

All in all, Panic Button exceeded our expectations – a well written story that deserves to be amongst some of the best modern day thrillers. Granted, Panic Button will not appeal to everyone and some may find some of the violent scenes a bit too extreme but everything is done in relation to the story and not at all gratuitous. Panic Button is our PlayEject sleeper hit of 2011 so far…!
